Cultural Humility and Compassionate Presence at the End of Life

Topics will include:
• engaging in self-reflection and self-critique
• bringing into check the power imbalances, by using client-focused interviewing and care
• assessing anew the cultural dimensions of the experience of each client
• relinquishing the role of expert to the client, becoming the student of the client
• seeing the client's potential to be a capable and full partner in the therapeutic alliance

The CARE Recommendations were designed to improve end-of-life care for nursing home clients by enhancing the advance care planning process and palliative care services.
Topics will include:
• Promising Practices: Several Bay Area organizations representing the continuum of Long Term Care will discuss the successes, challenges and barriers faced, especially as they relate to the CARE recommendations.
