MORNING PLENARY SESSION: 8:30AM - NOON

Part I.
Health Changes in Older Adults: The Impact on Mobility

Speaker: Helen Kao, MD
Assistant Professor, Division of Geriatrics and Medical Director of Geriatric Transitions, Consultation, and Comprehensive Care (GeriTraCCC), University of California, San Francisco

Topics will include:
• Natural processes of aging
• Physical changes ( e.g., sensory, bones and muscle, digestion, circulatory, sexuality
• Risk factors associated with decreased mobility
• Effects of decreased mobility (e.g., functional limitations, disability, depression)

Part 2: When to Have "The Conversation": Older Drivers and Associated Risks

Speaker: Karyn Skultety, PhD
Director of Clinical and Community Services, Institute on Aging

Topics will include:
• Warning signs and risks of difficulty driving
• The psychosocial impact of not being able to drive anymore • How to take the keys away: A step by step approach, who can you recruit to help (family, doctors, case workers, DMV)
• Benefits of a multidisciplinary "team" approach
• Educating and empowering health care professions

AFTERNOON BREAKOUT SESSION I (CHOOSE ONE)

Public Works and Public Transportation: How Does the City of San Francisco Help Older Adults
Summary: Over twenty agencies in the San Francisco Bay Area provide public transportation using buses, streetcars, trains, ferryboats and paratransit vehicles. Public transportation can be a convenient and inexpensive way to travel. In this 60-minute breakout session, participants will learn how San Francisco helps older adults with accessible transportation and will gain knowledge about how to access such services.

Grief and Loss Associated with Changes in Mobility
Summary: Loss of mobility is linked to depression and social isolation in older adults. This 60-minute breakout session, conducted by a leading expert in the field of grief and loss amongst seniors, will both the effects of decreased mobility and teach participants how they can help. Participants will learn to apply the principles of assessing older seniors with mobility loss and the learn how to implement and evaluate an appropriate action plan.

AFTERNOON BREAKOUT SESSION II (CHOOSE ONE)

Using Technology to Increase Independence
Summary: Technology can benefit seniors in many ways, getting them information that they need even when mobility is limited. Some examples include: remote patient management and monitoring, medication optimization, cognitive fitness and assessment, assistive technologies, disease management, remote training and supervision, and social networking. In this 60-minute breakout session participants will hear from an expert health services researcher dedicated to the identification and rapid diffusion of technologies that will improve home- and community-based care for seniors.

Eating Well: How Nutrition Can Promote Health and Mobility
Summary: Older adults tend to need fewer calories as they age because they are not as physically active as they once were and their metabolic rates slow down. Nevertheless, their bodies still require the same or higher levels of nutrients for optimal health outcomes. The USDA published the Modified MyPyramid for Older in January 2008.

AFTERNOON PLENARY SESSION

Promoting Health and Mobility in Older Adults: How You Can Help by Including Exercise

Speaker: Sharon Gorman, PT, DPTSc, GCS
Associate Professor, Dept. of Physical Therapy, Samuel Merritt University

Presented by a Licensed Physical Therapist and physical therapy and mobility educator, this final presentation of the plenary session will center on approaches for maintaining mobility and independence for older adults. Participants will learn the health benefits of physical activity, best practices in programming, and guidelines and recommendations regarding physical activity for older adults.
